For all you Pommies planning on riding south for the winter, there's good news. The Queensland Government is hoping to reduce the number of motorbike casualties on its roads by introducing flexible road signs.
The imaginatively titled 'bendy signs' are part of a five-year million programme targeting safety issues surrounding popular biking spots in the state. "These [signs] are Australian first technology; I'm hoping they'll be a real triumph in road safety for motorbike riders," said Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace. "Without a doubt, [motorcyclists] are the most vulnerable on our roads."
He went on to explain that while bikers account for just 5% of Aussie road-users, they're 30 times more likely to be killed in a collision. "We simply must turn these statistics around," he added.
